Learn A New Skill

Jordan Norwood, Personal Trainer –

People learn new skills for a variety of reasons. Sometimes a new skill set is necessary for a new job. Other times, we learn things to help our minds develop and grow stronger, or for a sense of accomplishment and overall satisfaction. When you learn a new skill there are many benefits gained, benefits that extend far beyond the skill that is learned. In this blog, take a look and examine some of the advantages of learning a new skill.

1.) Your Learning Speed Increases

Developing a new skill helps you learn other new things at faster speeds over time. Because neurons are triggered in the brain, more neural pathways are formed, and electrical impulses travel faster across them as you attempt to process new information. The more pathways that are formed the faster impulses can travel thus we learn and store information faster.

2.) Better Sense of Self

When you decide to take on a new challenge or work toward a goal, it is a reflection of what is important to you. In other words, think of this new skill as a “puzzle piece” that is being added to the already built, but not yet finished puzzle that is you. The desired outcome in this process is to figure out what you really enjoy. Being willing to try something new is healthy because you may end up with a better understanding of what resonates with you and what doesn’t. Furthermore, seeking new skills and interests that you feel passionately about is active and positive. It is up to you to discover what “clicks” with you…☺

3.) Relate, Relate, Relate

Often times, the most compelling individuals are those people who are skilled or knowledgeable in many areas of life.  When we commit to learning new skills, we are in a position to get to know others with similar interests.  Relationships that are formed around common goals form the bedrock of our personal successes. Meaningful relationships are indeed a benefit that should not be overlooked.

Challenge yourself to develop and learn a new skill. This skill can be something fitness and exercise related, or something else that you are interested in. The time is now, find something new that you are passionate about and welcome the new challenge.  Enjoy the process of learning and personal development. Don’t miss the many benefits and feelings of accomplishment as you work toward your new goal.
